Shearer Hills Baptist Church has earned a reputation in San Antonio and South Texas as having one of the most respected Fine Arts Ministries in the area. SHBC members and the community at large have embraced SHBC special events relating to the seasonal holidays and special emphases such as those on the church and the family.
Opportunities in Music Ministry
SANCTUARY CHOIR - All adults who love to sing and are called to worship leadership are welcome in this non-auditioned choral organization which has the on-going responsibility for providing music for all Sunday morning worship services and special events. This choir is the heart of the SHBC Music Ministry. Rehearsals are held in the Sanctuary each Wednesday evening 6:30 to 7:45. During preparation for special events rehearsal time is extended to 8:30. A variety of musical styles from classical to contemporary are prepared for worship presentation.
PRESCHOOL CHOIR - This is an activity group for those ages 4 and 5 by the fall enrollment date. Various kinds of musical activities are planned for the children to help them begin to experience group as well as individual expression of feelings about God, family, and friends. Very elementary musical education of rhythm and matching pitch are introduced. Meeting time is 5:30 to 6:30 each Sunday evening during the public school year.
ORCHESTRA - Opportunity is given to those who play instruments other than keyboards to be a part of the SHBC Orchestra, which is open to students (7th grade and above) and adults. Rehearsal time is limited to co-ordination and interpretation of the music, so it is necessary to have mastered skill on the instrument prior to being a part of this group. Limited scholarships are available to SHBC members wishing private instruction on string and brass instruments to enable them to share in this area of music ministry. The immediate goal of this ministry is to play for special events during the church year and for at least one Sunday morning service a month. The long-term goal is to grow this ministry in size and involvement to play for all Sunday morning services. Rehearsal times vary.
Opportunities in Drama Ministry
Currently the SHBC Drama Ministry finds ministry involvement in two main areas. The first is an extension of the Music Ministry. Those who are gifted and interested in acting are included in special presentations during the year that call for non-singing stage roles. The second is a traditional non-musical special presentation at Easter - "THE LIVING LAST SUPPER". With the exception of two years, this presentation has been given from two to seven evenings each Easter since 1981. The presentation, which involves a full cast and production crew and has successfully ministered to literally thousands of persons over the course of its history, is reworked and updated each year to remain fresh and interesting. In addition to these phases of ministry, a long-term goal is to extend the SHBC drama ministry to include a drama team that can be used in the Sunday morning worship services to give additional expression and interpretation to the day's central worship emphasis.
